Hello,

I have a friend who has both Japanese and Australian citizenship. He only has a Japanese passport. When checking on the Working Holiday Program page, it says that he is only able to get a 1 year working holiday visa.

If he gets an Australian passport, he has to forfeit his Japanese one (which he wants to keep, if possible).

Is this correct? If so, how do Japanese normally migrate to Canada, since they have only one year visa?

Any other info is helpful too.

This looks like more than just having to give up a passport but maybe also citizenship https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_nationality_law the rules seem pretty complex about dual nationality in Japan so not sure applies to your friend or not. It is not an Australian requirement as far as I know given some people do/can hold more than one citizenship/passport there.

I am a Japanese citizen born in Japan. As far as I know, Japan doesn't allow Japanese citizens to have dual citizenship once they hit legal age (which is 20) Your friend will have to give up his Japanese citizenship to obtain Australian one unless he's under 20. And find his way to stay longer in Canada if that's what he wants. (Such as LMIA based workpermit, study permit etc)
