Is my score (471) worth a try?

Hi,

I was hoping to get some advice on whether I should give it a try with the score I have, I have taken the IELTS exam a few times and my listening score (8) is below the top bracket (8.5 - 9). 471 is the estimated score I see on the https://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/crs-tool.asp website.

I know there is increasing competition to get the invitation, but does anyone know if 471 is reasonably high to give it a try? or do you absolutely recommend taking the IELTS exam again and up my score by 3. (I believe if I max out on the IELTS the score I will get is 474).

Any help would be appreciated.

I think 471 is a pretty good score. I recommend that you wait for 1-2 draws at least.
thank you - do you mean to wait to see what the cut offs are for the next 1-2 draws are? I am worried that the cut off will keep rising.

I have a feeling that the cut off will drop. Just wait for a month and then decide. On September 2, 2020 the cut-off was 475 , on September 16, 2020 it was 472 and on September 30, 2020 it was 471. No harm in waiting for a month. Good luck!

Thank you - but I see for CEC the score was 454. If I apply under CEC? do I get pooled into "No program specified" which I think is for Federal Skilled Workers? Curious how this grouping works.

No program specified means ALL THE GROUPS (CEC, FSW, FST are invited). Based on the information that you will provide in your express entry profile, if you meet the eligibility requirements of CEC and your CRS is above the cut-off, you will be invited for PR.

I see. Why do they have a separate group for CEC? Is there a luck component to this? For example if you qualify for CEC you can either get into CEC specific pool or the general pool (which has higher cutoff)?

Generally, before the pandemic, all the people were pooled in the General (No program specified ) Pool and were invited based on the cut-off. However, in the COVID-19 pandemic, the Govt of Canada took special measures to invite those people for PR who had Canadian Experience or were living in Canada. Most people under the CEC and PNP category live in Canada. By inviting only the CEC or PNP candidates the Govt. gave preference to people inside CANADA to apply for PR this year. However, nowadays as the border restrictions are getting easier, the Govt. is inviting people from the general pool i.e people living in any part of the world.

That makes sense. I missed my chance I guess.

International student on PGWP with one year of experience. 29.
Are you counting points for having a job offer? If so, assume your employer has obtained an approved LMIA?

No, it's not under LMIA. So I don't think I can include the points for having a job offer.
That's right. So sounds like you're good. Sometimes people mistakenly claim the 50 job offer points under a PGWP with no LMIA.
