Is it legal for me to do investment in Canada?

I'm an international student. My program is with Co-op, so I have a SIN.
With this SIN, banks can open a direct investing account for me.
But I heard that it's illegal for an international student to do that. The investing behavior will be recorded which will hinder my application of PR. Is that true?
