Hallo
I am just about the book the tickets for landing and have chosen Halifax in Nova Scotia because my husband got a fellowship at the university there. Though it is unpaid , we hope this will give him the chance to hold any position in the university in the future.
Now I am having a bit of concern that we might have chosen the wrong city to start. So can anyone please answer the following questions
1-Does Halifax have enough survival jobs?
2- Are the student loans as high as the OSAP in Ontario?
3- I Know it is more expensive than Toronto but is it really so expensive?

Perhaps I am not going to be of much use, but I held a postdoctoral fellowship in a university in Ontario on a work permit. I have never been to Halifax. Possibility of obtaining a faculty position elsewhere in Canada: depends on the area your husband is working. Is the university at Halifax a leader on that field? If not, chances are dim. In my case, my fellowship enabled me to obtain a tenure-track position. The place where you land should not matter as long as the university/advisor of your husband is well-recognized in Canada in whatever the research area he is working.

As long as it has a fellowship for your husband,it might be the best place for you in Canada.
My brother also arrived here at a fellowship with U of T.Then he got two more fellowships at U of A .After that he was able to get a licence as a Surgeon here due to the fellowships. So even NS is considered more expensive than other provinces,in the present situation, that might be the best option for you.

All the best!

Thank you for your reply. The host professor is a leader in his field. It is Dalhousie university and the field is agriculture.

Thank you for your reply. I hope my husband will be recruited in one of the many research projects in his department,,,,I think he will have better chances being there and knowing the people.

Halifax is not a big city but quite a modern one, not many jobs in the market but a small size of Indian Community, as far as the fellowship or research is considered I do not have much Idea. Dalhausie University is a renowned one across Canada and is main univ of Nova Scotia. The city is slightly more expensive than other provinces considering the tax structure to be higher. Rentals are though slightly less than Ontario/Toronto.
My daughter works in Halifax on Post Grad work permit and is quite happy with the city. Its safe and quite with lots of student population.
I hope i could be of some help !!!
