Dear All,
I was a teacher and then Principal of a School in India. I got my visa after a lot of struggle as a Teacher. Now I am a successful teacher in Canada, BC. The process is altogether identical in all states of Canada. I struggled a lot to find out how to get my certification here and what would be better for me to start my career.
The procedure of getting your teaching degree upgraded is very simple, but no one guides properly. I had to scuffle everyday to achieve this position. I want all fellow teachers to be guided properly. You can visit these websites and feel free to ask questions if you have any doubts. There are two options, however, getting Independent school certification is a bit short and easy process. You can find a good job and earn around $ 3500 right in the beginning.
First of all you should get your education credential evaluation from a credential evaluation Organization, which is different in every province, whereas it has comparable results everywhere.

Please do not forget to bring your education transcripts from India or any other country. Transcript of Bachelor and Master degree whatever you have, along with Bachelor of education degree too. Afterwards you can undergo the process as under:

Hello Ms. Kalra

I read your post. It's quite helpful.

I need your guidance for my situation. I am a recent immigrant in Canada from India. I was a teacher back home having more than 5 years of experience for teaching in a private school. I have completed my B.com and B.Ed from India. Both my degrees have been WES Certified. Do I still need a BC Teaching License ? I don't want to be an Education Assistant. I would like to work as a full time regular teacher in BC private or public schools. How am I supposed to continue to apply for the same... I have read the instructions given on BC official website....but still had questions regarding WES Certified applications. Kindly guide .

Awaiting your response.

Hello,
Well, I have gone through bc website and I'm confused with the documents required.
It would be helpful if you share which documents did you submit to get your license.

WES is very different than being licensed as a teacher in BC. There is a 1 year bridging course you can take to become a teacher in B.C.

You need to look at the teacher licensing organization in BC. There are good chances you may need to do the 1 year bridging program in BC. Would warn you that there is an excess of teachers in many areas of Canada so full-time employment may take many years. Really depends on the area, the subject you teach and what is going on in politics when it comes to education.

Doing an ECE degree makes no sense since you have to show career progression. To teach kindergarten or primary school you must be a teacher not an ECE. Every province has there own requirements when it comes to getting licensed as a teacher. There is a teacher shortage in some subjects and areas in Canada at the moment so you may be able to get licensed and find a job in some provinces without further schooling. Have you looked at immigration programs? How many years have you worked and was it in one of your fields of study? Are you flexible when it comes to what province you want to live in?

I prefer Ontario or BC due to friends living there . What steps / procedure to follow after study route to become a teacher ?

You will need to contact the licensing board in both provinces. Usually you need to get a teaching degree from Canada to work in Ontario and you usually need to do a 1 year bridging program to work as a teacher in BC. I have heard that if you are willing to work in a remote community then you may not need to do the 1 year bridging program. If your goal is to be near friends then a remote community is probably not an option.

Teaching social science is usually not a teachable in demand like French and STEM subjects. A diploma in ECE is taking a big step back so would not make sense since you need to show that your choice of program will lead to career progression. Would focus on a masters degree. Would still focus on immigration.

If you are talking about teaching in public elementry or high school (referred to k-12), MBA isn't going to help you. You need an education degree. Some provinces have bridgting programs. You need to check the certification of the province that you want to teach.
e.g. this is for BC
