Hello. Am a lesbian from Uganda who has kept it a secret for about 11years because of my family and country at large. However I have reached a point where I can't keep it anymore. Me and my girlfriend want to relocate to Canada but one at a time because we can't manage financially for the two of us at once. Please advise on steps to take and also if u can recommend a lawyer for us. We will be very grateful. Thanks. Am Hajjara from Uganda

Are you planning on claiming asylum in Canada or are you thinking of applying for permanent residency through one of Canada's economic immigration programs like Express Entry based on your level of education / skilled work experience / funds available to settle in Canada / etc.?

If you want to claim asylum, then you will need to obtain a TRV (tourist visa), fly to Canad and then claim asylum once you arrive here. To be approved for a TRV, you will need to show strong ties to your home country (e.g. employment, property, assets) and show you have no plans to stay here long term. You will also have to show that you have enough money saved to pay for your trip to Canada. It will help if you have previous travel to other countries requiring visas such as the US or UK.

Note that Canada's boarders are closed to all but essential travel due to COVID-19 until the end of June.
