Hi,
I'm currently in Canada on the international experience Canada work permit but my Canadian partner is going to sponsor me to stay. I know as an inland application I can apply for an open work permit but I just wondered how long the permits are usually valid for. Is it just until they make a decision on your application or can it run out before the decision is made? If it begins to get close to expiring can you extend it again?
I'm planning to send off the application end of July as we are going to the uk to visit my family at the start of July and I think it's better to apply once we are back as I'm leaving the country. My current visa/work permit doesn't run out until sept 2017 but I want to make sure to apply before the open work permit trial ends (if they don't decide to extend it again as last year)
Thanks
:)

When you say your `partner', does that mean that you have the required one year of cohabiting to qualify for a Common-Law partner sponsorship?

Are you certain that the Inland application is your best option? Most Outland applicants complete the process much faster...even those that may already be IN Canada when/while their application is being processed.

The OWP is generally valid for up to two years, but may be less if your passport expires sooner.

Since you don't yet need an OWP, you should investigate the Outland option.

The U.K. Takes 14 months and I have 16 months left on my current work permit.
I thought it would be cutting it very close if it takes longer than the 14 months. I have a great job that I wouldn't want to lose if I ended up without a work permit. :o

NO! Those from the UK are seeing really quick processing times...like less than 6 months.

Submit an Outland application!

Spend some time looking through this thread (and find the spreadsheet):

The online times are basically just worst-case scenarios. Make sure your app is complete with all required information. There's no way you should apply inland with an IEC permit good for nearly another year and a half.

I am a teacher and I worked in Iraq for 16 months - I have an emailed police check from the Kurdish regional government in London uk as the Iraqi embassy would not give me a police report as they said I was living in Kurdistan and not Iraq (which is not a recognized country!). So anyway my copy was accepted for my i.e.c visa but I'm not sure that it will be accepted for my spousal sponsorship but it took me over a year to just obtain this. I was actually allowed my first i.e.c visa without the police report at all as I explained how I was unable to get one from London. However this makes me worry that my application will not be a fast one as I will have to go through these issues and explanations again (I will send a supporting letter detailing this). So that's another reason that I was thinking inland is better for the open work permit while this is assessed.
