Hello fellow inlanders. I'm a newbie here but have been following the thread for a while now.

My girlfriend is sponsoring me through common law & just about done all the paperwork &
got my medical next week just getting the proof of relationship stuff together before I send it off.

Anyhow my question is in the proof of relationship if we get letters from 2 of our friends who have known both of us before we were dating & now are aware of our relationship & can verify that it's genuine & continuing do those letters need to be certified ? Like by a notary ?

Hey there woodyc, welcome.

As far as I know, the letters from family/friends do not need to be certified. I would have the letter writer provide contact information just in case, but I don't think they would be contacted. We had letters written from my family/friends and letters written from my husband's family - the latter was a letter written in a different language and roughly translated by my husband. None of our letters were notarized but there was contact information provided for all but one of the three letters.

Some visa offices do require that for common-law. The best thing to do is carefully review your checklist.

I personally had a few friends write letters as proof of our relationship and also had two notarized letters, just in case. Better safe than sorry. Good luck!

Ok,......an important info required........

When I previously entered Canada, the border service agent had put a stamp and a date on it. And, I went back to my home country for 3 weeks , months before that date. when I re-entered Canada, there is only a stamp and no date. So, my entry is valid for 6 months from my recent entry or the date which was put on my previous entry??

Please help........

Six months from the latest stamp. You complied with the time limitation of the prior stamp when you left Canada.

Hey buddy. How are u? How the holiday? I'm still here waiting on CIC as I can't hear nothing. I wonder what's happening! Its over 8 months. Do u believe my file is transferred without AIP and I don't know? If not, do you think that Vegreville could still transfer it without AIP after so many months

Thanks a bunch guys I'll def get 2 letters notarised.

Now the hard part just gotta get my friends to a notary office at the same time with both their work schedule & all.
Might just have to spend the extra money & get it done separately.

Also another thing I noticed in the guide which lucky I saw last night my common-law partner was once in a common-law relationship like 5 years ago do we have to print up a Declaration of severance of common‑law relationship ? ( Q10 & Q10b [ IMM 5285 )

I found a sample Declaration of severance of common‑law relationship on another thread should we just print that out & modify it for her & get it notarised ?

Cause it just says a photocopy format in the guide ?

I've never heard about this issue before. Did your partner sign a "Statutory Declaration" for her previous relationship? If they did, it would probably be a good idea to fill out the "Declaration of Severance". As I said before, better safe than sorry. The more proof you have, the better.

If your partner ever filed taxes as common-law or had it declared in any other manner, if they owned a house together, etc, yes you need that form.

Is he on good terms with the former partner? Will she sign the declaration? If they aren't on good terms, he may want to contact her via email or text message, so if she refuses to sign, he has proof he had tried to contact her.
