Hi Everyone,

As Canadian Experience Class applicants I thought some of you may be in a similar situation to me where you are currently working in canada on a work permit, but about to receive your PR. I understand that the day you Land, your current work permit will become invalid and I will have to go get a new SIN number, I think this is correct?

What have your experiences been with communicating this to your employer to ensure they update your SIN number on file for your pay stub? I would assume it's simpler to do your landing at the end of the week so you can start the next pay week clean with a new SIN number? If anyone has any experiences with this please share!

Does this also mean we should get two separate T4's from the employer, a separate one for each SIN number?

Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks! :)

Your old and new sin numbers are linked by service canada - you will get one t4.
While your work permit is invalid, I don't believe your sin is invalid - it's more so they know you aren't a PR due to your number. You should change it at your earliest convenience - mine was done a few days after I landed.

Informing your company depends on their policies - I just emailed payroll and they updated my file.

oh thanks so much for the information lpc19800.

That's interesting they link your sin numbers. So when you get your T4 at the end of the year will it say your old SIN on it or your new one?

As chances are I will probably end up working at another company sometime this year, I'm wondering what happens when I do my tax if I have one T4 with my old sin number another T4 with the new. Will accountants be able to tell that they are both for me and still be able to do just one return?

The accountants I've seen in the past at HR Block seemed to get confused enough with my case when I had just one sin number with my work permit haha. Can anyone share their experience doing their taxes in this situation of old sin and new sin? or recommend any accountants in Vancouver?

Thanks!

I have 2 t4's - one for my old company with my old number. The other from EI with my new number.
My accountant just files it all under my name - I don't know how he knows to link.
I don't go with h&r block - yelp has good reviews so you should try that for recommendations.

i am not sure about answers to your specific questions but i had a TIN (tax identification number) for those who dont have a SIN and want to file the tax.
then later i switched to work permit and got a SIN. CRA had no problem linking my two files together. In fact, it was CRA who told me that they link the two files together.
the accountants might not be able to recognize two SINs belong to same person but CRA will. so dont worry and file the tax all under your name.

Great, Thanks so much for the info!

It's called ITN, not TIN. Whether you use the ITN or SIN (once you get it), both will point to the same person/file. Actually when I got my SIN, I called CRA and the agent told me that they have both in my file already.

after we got new sin, do we need inform previous employer????
our old sin number is still workING when the previous employer use it to report to CRA????

Above posts clearly mentioned that CRA knows that the 2 sin #'s belong to the same person. CRA will attach the info from previous employer to your new file.
