I am currently coming out of an abuses relationship where my husband put me out of his apartment with his child and render us homeless. I am staying with a family friends but it as gotten quit uncomfortable for me and the baby. I was advise to not go on any social assistance because it will lesson my chance of getting my paper. I was considering to go on housing so i can have a peace of mind with my child but i am afraid don't want it to mess up my paper work. Just asking if it's safe to go on housing while applying for my permanent resident.

In that case it's very hard to say. We have seen cases where IRCC has looked to refuse H&C applications because the applicant is not financially independent.

If at all possible, you should stay off social assistance. How long ago did you apply?

Social housing still requires you to pay rent and there is often a long wait list. You would have to get welfare to be able to pay rent. What is your current status in Canada? When did you arrive? Do you have healthcare coverage? Do you have healthcare debt as well from the birth?

Given your current situation you wouldn’t qualify for welfare. You are in a pretty tough situation. I would consider returning home where you have family support and somewhere to stay. The only issue is that you would permission of your spouse to leave with the baby.

You are possibly going to have significant issues if you are out of status. You can't legally work and therefore would not be able to show that you are capable of being financially self-sufficient. Understand that H&C applications have only about a 60% success rate. Plan accordingly.
