Hello,

My open wok permit expires very soon (in just over a week!). I have submitted an application to extend my stay as a visitor (form IMM5708) and have had confirmation that it has been received. As far as I am aware this gives me implicit status, allowing me to stay in Canada (without working) while a decision is made, however I haven't had any explicit confirmation that this is the case and am a little bit concerned that I may still need to leave the country when my original permit expires. Can anybody clear this up for me? Do I have to leave the country next week, or can I stay until my application is approved or denied?

1. It is not implicit status, it is now maintained status (change from implied status). You have status until CIC makes a decision on your extension as a visitor.
2. From the CIC website

"All temporary residents have an automatically imposed condition that they must leave Canada at the end of their authorized period of stay. However, as per section R181, a temporary resident may apply to extend their period of authorized stay before it ends. If they have done so, their period of authorized stay as a temporary resident is extended by law until a decision is made [R183(5)]. Such a person is considered to have legal status as a temporary resident during the processing period. "
