Hi Guys. I just moved into Fanshawe College, London, ON for my course in Professional Financial Services. It is a 1 Year Course. I've been hearing a lot of talk that students who take up a 1 Yr PG course will not be able to stay back in Canada for more than 2 years.

So I get one year of stay back in Canada after my course gets over. When that stay back(work permit) gets over, can I re apply for another work permit and have it granted?

And if it is not granted, how can I stay back in canada after that? Is that something I have to worry about during my study period at the college?

Please help me with this topic and let me know more. Please share your thoughts about this.

If you complete a one year course - you will get a one year post graduate work permit.

If you want to remain in Canada and work longer than your post graduate work permit allows, you'll need to secure a full time job offer from an employer and that employer will need to obtain an approved LMIA. It's generally extremely difficult to find employers willing to go through the LMIA process. Alternatively, if you qualify to apply for PR and are able to apply and be accepted before your PGWP expires, you can then use your PR acceptance to apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit. However it tends to be difficult to qualify and be selected for PR that quickly.

Generally speaking, it's much better to take a two year course or two one year courses so that you can qualify for a three year PGWP. This gives you a much better chance of being able to qualify and apply for PR (if that's something that matters to you).

Hi. Thank you for the great reply. I do not have enough finance to look after my second year of studies. SO please guide me what I could do after my work permit expires next year.

I feel discouraged at this point, that too when I have finally reached Canada. Please let me know of some alternative ways to make it happen.

Thanks.

Sorry - I don't really understand your question.

There's no way to get a longer PGWP if you are taking a one year course. You will only qualify for a one year PGWP (same length as your studies).

Again, if you manage to apply and be selected under an economic immigration program before your PGWP runs out, you will be able to apply for a BOWP that will allow you to keep working. You'll need to research Canada's immigration program to see what it takes to qualify and apply. Details are found here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/apply.asp

Otherwise you need a full time job offer and approved LMIA which tends to be very difficult to do.
