Hi All,

Myself and my common law partner are almost finished with her application for permanent residence from within Canada. I am stuck on a couple of points with the application to sponsor. I have been living in Thailand with her since may of 2012. For that reason I have not had to file an income tax return since 2012. I therefore will not be able to supply CIC with an option C printout for the most recent taxation year. I have requested an option C printout for 2012 from CRA, but I gather they are looking for one for 2014? I guess I write them a letter explaining my situation?? Also, on the sponsorship evaluation form IMM5481, question 3, they ask for my net income for the 12 months preceding the application. I was working offshore while living overseas, but was paid in US dollars. Do I just calculate the money I earned and give them the total in USD, or should I convert it to CAD? I am not working at the moment, so will have to put unemployed for the answer to question 2.
Just hoping to make sure this application is a success, so if anyone has any advice on my above concerns we would sure appreciate hearing from you. Thanks!!

Wow, this is a fairly similar situation to mine. First thing to put your mind at ease, is that there is no minimum income requirement if there are no kids involved :)

I've been a student for the past 6 years, and haven't had income either, and didn't have the Option C printout. So I did not include it, but I did write a full out letter indicating my assets (I bought property before going to school and had built some equity), and included photocopies of proof (mortgage statements, land title, property assessment), and I made sure to write a solid paragraph indicating that I was more than willing to access the equity as required.

So, for your situation, I highly recommend doing a cover letter explaining your situation, and photocopies/translations of any proof of income you may have had in Thailand. For the question about the income, definitely convert it into Canadian dollars (include this conversion in your letter of explanation as well).

Anyhow, I got approved to be my husband's sponsor, so I'm sure that you would be able to sponsor your wife :)
