Hello all,

I need some guidance in filling out the forms. I'm applying under CEC:

Question 7 on IMM5669E: Education
1. My master's degree was a 2 years degree but it dragged to 3 years because I did internship for a year in the middle. So the question is should I make two entries in the form and say I pursued the degree from 2007-2008 (leaving the Type of certificate issued as blank and just enter the just field of study) and another entry for the same university saying 2009 - 2010 and mention that I was awarded "Master's" in this entry?
2. Do we have to mention anything about internship in question 7?
3. The final question is about secondary education: Graduating from high school in India I don't think so they issue any diploma or certification and there is no field of study either ??? Is this a correct statement? If so should I mark it down as NONE? Or someone please suggest what you did for your application

In Education section: 3 years as you were pursuing Masters for 3 years. You were enrolled (full time or legal status) in your university during internship, right???

2. Do we have to mention anything about internship in question 7?
About internship you can mention in previous history section.

3. The final question is about secondary education: Graduating from high school in India I don't think so they issue any diploma or certification and there is no field of study either ??? Why not? They give Secondary (for 10th grade) and Senior secondary (for 12th) certificates, so I wrote these in the columns provided (where it asks for certi/ diploma/degree etc) and since I had Science stream, I wrote Science as my field of study. (India has Science, Arts and Commerce as secondary education).
Hope this helps... :)

Thanks pmpm for your prompt response.
@Knada: You can write your name using a pen. It's not absolutely necessary to type it out

@PMPM: I would like to ask you something about IM5669E. I'm at wits end trying to fill the personal history and need some expert advice from you :)

(PS: This is not the complete history since 18 but just to get an idea)

Nov-2011 to Present : Working as Consultant Worker

May-2011 to Oct-2011: Worked as retail sales person Worker

March-2010 to April-2011: Worked as retail sales person Student

Jan-2009 to August-2009: Worked as software developer Co-op student

Jan-2008 to June-2011 Studying student

1. You can already see that I have mentioned my role as retail sales person TWICE. The status was however different if you take a close look at it and the reason was I was doing it as part time job with off campus work permit and then I became full time with my post graduate work permit. So does it make sense to mention it twice?

2. I'm really concerned about the order in which I've laid out this history because some of these activities were happening at the same time and I went for co-op and stuff.I would like to get some input from you whether it looks okay to you (and you dont see any gaps?). A fresh set of eyes is always helpful.

You say you finished study June 2011; but your work starts May 2011?? Is June 2011 your convocation date? Just to clearify

1. You can already see that I have mentioned my role as retail sales person TWICE. The status was however different if you take a close look at it and the reason was I was doing it as part time job with off campus work permit and then I became full time with my post graduate work permit. So does it make sense to mention it twice?

A: How I did was in my previous history column, I mentioned the MAIN ACTIVITY; for example you were student (as main activity) even if you worked at retail (part time/ co-op) for that period; in your case it would be Jan 2008 to June 2011.
Here my question is when you did Co-op, you did that too with off-campus work permit and you were enrolled for that period in University right? Your co-op spans in 8 months, that's why want to confirm.

Regarding the part time work, I wrote a cover letter explaining my activities other than main activity (student) for that period and attached it to the form. It was done in order to avoid any confusion to VO and have things as clear as possible, you can take some advice from seniors too.

2. I'm really concerned about the order in which I've laid out this history because some of these activities were happening at the same time and I went for co-op and stuff.I would like to get some input from you whether it looks okay to you (and you dont see any gaps?). A fresh set of eyes is always helpful.
I do not see any gaps, but make sure that you are considering a month even if you used only 1 day or 1 week of that, I mean if you started your work on 25th April 2011 (just for the sake of argument, don't know the actual date) do mention the date in front of column and don't start with May. Hope I am making sense.... :) Like wise, keep an eye on all your dates.
Hope this helps.

Yes, June 2011 was my graduation date (aka convocation date). I was done with all my courses by January 2011 and the convocation wasn't until Spring 2011.

The reason why I started work in May (a month earlier) is cuz I received my Post Graduate Work Permit on May itself and it's been valid since then (CIC allows you to apply of PGWP once it says "COMPLETE" on your transcript so that's how I got the permit early and started working)

Also, I was enrolled full time when I did my co-op and I was working under the "Co-op Work permit" and NOT off campus work permit

I did not understand the thing about the date stuff you were talking about.. the application has provision for only for MM-YYYY and that's why I rounded it up. It's not like I started with each of these activities right on the 1st of each month lol. Can you explain to me about that?

And finally, your saying that I could possibly just put STUDYING as my main activity and explain the rest in a cover letter? That would be easier (I think and we can avoid any discrepancies because I will explain everything in detail in the cover letter ) :)

Yeah, for that I printed the page after typing all info, and then wrote in front of MM-YYYY row (left side, there is some space). As I said, that was done only to avoid questions later. Its completely upto you to decide how you would want to do.

And finally, your saying that I could possibly just put STUDYING as my main activity and explain the rest in a cover letter? That would be easier (I think and we can avoid any discrepancies because I will explain everything in detail in the cover letter ) :)
On the other note, the work done before convocation (even with PGWP) will not be counted towards the 30 hours requirement. Work done with PGWP, only after convocation date will be counted for your eligibility in case you are planning to use May hours towards work exp. Similarly goes to Co-op work hours, only suggesting this in case you are not aware; this concerns the Schedule 008 where we need to show eligible work exp.

@PMPM: Most of all, I would like to thank you for your active support. Filling up these forms are very tricky and your help is much appreciated.

Spot on! I did not count those experiences for my eligibility.I'm aware of that.

However, I have another question about the graduation date: I mentioned earlier "Yes, June 2011 was my graduation date (aka convocation date). I was done with all my courses by January 2011 and the convocation wasn't until Spring 2011." So the question is .. what is exactly considered as my graduation date?
(a) Jan-2011 - because this was the time(end of fall semester) I was done with all my courses and transcripts were marked as "COMPLETE"
(b) June-2011 - because this was the actual convocation date when I was awarded the degree.

I'm asking this question because you said : "You say you finished study June 2011; but your work starts May 2011?? Is June 2011 your convocation date? Just to clarify"
If I choose (a) the transition will look smooth and education will also be exactly 3 years instead of 3 years and 5 months for ex:

Nov-2011 to Present : Working as Consultant Worker

May-2011 to Oct-2011: Worked as retail sales person Worker

March-2010 to April-2011: Worked as retail sales person Student

Jan-2009 to August-2009: Worked as software developer Co-op student

Since you have PGWP, VO/CIC already know the date when your degree was awarded, technically date of your convocation that is XX June 2011. So its your judgement if you want to put Jan 2011 as last date of your studies, provided you will be explaining in your cover letter what you did from Feb 2011-April 2011. I see that you have listed this period (but its hidden in Mar 2010-April 2011), so my suggestion is be clear and careful about the explaining. Sometimes VO don't pay too much attention to finer details, as you can see many people are getting appli returned.

It might seem hassle but we all want to do our best.
Just make sure that dates match in education, previous history and occupation forms.
Don't worry too much, as long as your info is clear and valid, you are good to go.

My husband whose Egyptian wants to know what he would put in Field of Study for primary/elementary school and secondary as there was not a specific field until he reached high school (grades 10-12).

Also, for university, he finished one year in the Arts department. For that, would he want to write "no degree"?
