Hello Community,

In the shadow of Covid-19, is it possible to sponsor my brother who lives abroad? I am a permanent resident actually residing in Montreal, Quebec.

You can sponsor your brother if you meet all of the requirements below:

- You are single (no spouse, common law partner)
- You have no children
- Both of your parents are deceased
- You have no other family in Canada (e.g. aunts, uncles, etc.)

Hello again,

Has the situation changed since Covid-19? How would my brother apply for immigration? Can he come as a visitor and then apply while in Montreal? What are the chances? Thank you.

If your brother wants to immigrate permanently and live in Quebec then look at the Quebec program and find out if he is eligible. Based on education, work experience, age and language skills in French and English. Don’t know his chances without knowing his profile. He can apply for a visitor visa but still needs to be eligible for immigration. He can’t work.

No, the situation hasn't changed. The process for immigrating is the same as it what before COVID-19. Your brother needs to qualify based on factors like his level of education, years of skilled work experience, knowledge of French/English, age, funds available to settle in Canada, etc.

Which is better? To apply as a visitor, student?
What does he want to do? Immigrate or visit? If he wants just to visit you, he can come with a visitor visa. If he wants to immigrate you need to find the best way for him.

He has to choose. If he is a visitor, he visits but he can’t work and it gives him no benefit if he wants to permanently immigrate. Still needs to be eligible. If he studies, he needs to find a school, get accepted, show he can afford his studies and how it will get him a job back home.

It is in fact necessary for both of your parents to be deceased. There must be more to your story. The options I see are:

- You sponsored your mother and included your brother as a dependent
- Your brother immigrated through an economic immigration stream and received additional points for having you as a family member
- You misrepresented the fact that your mother is still alive in the application
