You mean get a US work permit or a Canadian work permit? If you mean the US, how are you going to get a valid US work permit if you are out of status? If you're asking about a Canadian work permit, there is zero chance you'll be able to get one. First of all, you need a job offer and approved LMIA from a Canadian employer - this is next to impossible to get. Secondly, even if you had the job offer & approved LMIA, the work permit to Canada will be refused because you are out of status in the US.

Yes, but your wanting to come to Canada doesn't mean that it is possible.
Asylum is granted to people who need it. The crossing doesn't matter. If you can prove that you need asylum, you will get it.
Note that "need" does NOT mean "economic need". Simply being poor, or not getting a job in the US etc is not going to get you asylum. You'd have to show that your life is threatened.

If its in the US and a widely known illegal crossing I would say it would attract both the US Municipal and Federal level police. I don't think it would be watched continually just a heavy patrol of CBP and the city police. This would, on the city side, be mostly a traffic concern and nothing to do with immigration. Their concern is the people standing around in groups on city streets are traffics hazards.
Note you WILL be arrested by the RCMP on the Canadian side for illegal border crossing. Expect that RCMP charge to make your relations with the Canadian Government a bit "rough" in the future.

Your chances of getting asylum are basically zero. It's clear that you're an economic migrant, not a refugee.
You've been living safely in the US for five years.
I have no idea what your circumstances are, and if you're really in danger of your life of course you should try, but the likelihood of a successful asylum claim drops exponentially when the applicant comes from a safe country and has been living there for a long time.
I'm not judging you, just telling you what may happen. You can read up on asylum cases and make up your own mind.
