How do I go about this? From what I have read it says I need a job offer to apply for a work visa. Does that mean that handing out resumes and filling out applications is allowed so that I can obtain a job offer, and then apply for a work visa?

I'm a US citizen in Edmonton right now and would love any details anyone can help me out with. Not sure how exactly to apply for it.

Also wondering if an open work visa is even obtainable for me. I'm 21 years old with just a GED, no college or university.

Thanks ahead of time.

Yea you can apply to various tentative employers, get a job offer letter and with that offer letter apply for a work permit with CIC. Only post graduates from canadian colleges / universities are issued an open work permit which is equivalent to their length of study.

Well if you have previous work exp. you can use that as a bonus to apply for work...rest u can always apply for profiles that look for freshers to start and then work urself up the corporate ladder!!

1. You can apply for a job.
2. If an employer offers you a job, s/he must obtain a Labour Market Opinion from HRSDC that there are no Canadians/Prs available for the job and the wages and conditions meet the local criteria. The job must advertised on the job bank for 2 weeks. If the employer has CC/PRs applying for the job, s/he must convince HRSDC that you have better skills. If the LMO is approved, as a US citizen, you would then apply for a work permit at a Border office.
