I finished my first year of studies as a full time student. This year i wanted to take a gap year , i was wondering if they will terminate my study permit automatically and if so what can i do? . I also would like to know if i can go to canada and work without attending my university , afterall, i do have a work permit that was supposed to be used for co op later on.. is there a leniency on this?

1. Your study permit will expire 90 days after you are no longer a student, I don't think there is any way to stay in Canada for a year without studying.
2. No you cant work while not attending school, your co-op work permit is dependent on your study permit.

You need in the first instance to discuss your proposal with your university given it will be them who will report you for non attendance and many institutions have processes that support students taking authorised time out.

It is likely that once you are not actively enrolled/participating in a full time course that you will not meet the terms of your study permit to allow you to stay in Canada during this gap year other than maybe on a visitor basis . Personally I am not clear on the latter whether you need anything extra especially given your purpose would be suspended.

As previous poster for sure you are not allowed to work at all regardless of your coop work permit given you will have suspended your full time course attendance and also you would need to stop any part time work the moment that you suspend your attendance.

Also if you leave Canada during this gap make sure you have documentation to show that you are returning to take up your studies again, for example a letter from the university agreeing the break in the first instance.

Thank you , so after i explain my situation on why i need a gap year to the university, i ask for permission to take a gap year in form of a letter and then i show this letter to the embassy? Or will the university report my status to the canadian embassy and my study permit wont be canceled.. another side question, what if i am attending university, but not a full time student, given my circumstances ( a valid study permit , and i have a work permit ) can i work part time alongside attending university with fewer courses? The study permit states i need to be a full time student to work part time but as i said before i also have a work permit that depends on a valid study permit .

What do you plan to do during this gap year?

Dont think anybody will stop you from working part/full time and going to school part time, all the problems will come when you try to apply for PGWP or try to extend any permit, they will see you didn't follow the rules.

My maximum amount of courses that i can take is 10 per year(8 courses minimum to be considered a full time student) i was aiming to either take a gap year outside of canada to give my family some time to save some money due to unseen circumstances(id rather not do this because of the process of reapplying to a study permit all over again and plus, i dont think they would give it to me again if they see my study permit got canceled once) or take 4-6 courses and work part time in canada to be able to afford it . Why would they have a problem with this?

You can only work 20 hours/week anyway, also to be alligable for PGWP you need to be a full time student for all except last semester.

For the study permit as well you need to be fulltime.
