on the immigration website I can find no answer .
The basics:
my family -
1 American Citizen ( me)
1 Dutch national with a US PR green card ( my husband )who has been a PR of the US for the last 10 years
1 Dual American/Dutch citizen ( our last and 15 year old daughter )

We would like to immigrate permanently to Canada and husband and I both qualify in several different ways from farming to self employed to skilled trades.

I helped my husband when we came back to the States from Holland and I am not understanding something on the Canadian PR apps .
They are saying you need to show proof of residency in Canada on the applications ( which I am sure you all know ) and I have no clue how to do that .. I thought you had to have a PR BEFORE you could rent any sort of residence in Canada if no one else you know is living there . I lived in my husbands house when I and our daughter immigrated to Holland years ago so there was an instant address.

CAN you rent an apt in Canada without a PR card ?? .. I think I am misunderstanding something and just cannot see it . I know this must look just ridiculous but I cannot find an answer to this on the Immigration site

We did our own coming back from Holland and it was time intensive and a little twisty and 9 months long but not not difficult .

At this point we are both self employed in jobs that we can take anywhere. Living in Seattle and want to move to the Vancouver/Surrey/ Victoria areas.

Not sure how to proceed .

It sounds like you are trying to apply for a PR card. You do not qualify for a PR card and this is why you are running into issues. You must apply to become permanent residents first. Canada has various streams for becoming a permanent resident. You can read about these programs and how to apply here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/apply.asp

I would recommend you avoid applying for PR through the self employment stream. Processing times are extremely long (the posted processing time for these applications is 9 years).

Yikes OK ..
Yes what I meant was becoming a permanent resident ,, maybe I said that the wrong way. That's the link I took and it keeps telling me we qualify through ( of course ) the Self employment way, I run a farm . Part time I am an actress and my husband is an full time aviation mechanic .
Yes 9 years is a very long time . I'll try again to see if we qualify any other way

No - you didn't say anything the wrong way. However if you are being asked to provide proof of residency on the applications you are filling out - then you are filling out the wrong application. Again, it sounds to me like you are trying to fill out the PR card applications rather than actually applying for PR status. If you are applying for PR status as a skilled worker, you should be starting by completing an Express Entry profile online. Have you done that? If not - then you are filling out the wrong forms and applying for the wrong thing.

I'll try the express entry .

Note that if you apply through the Federal Skilled Worker / Express Entry program - this is a points based system. So just because you qualify doesn't mean you will be selected. So far no one with fewer than 450 points has been selected. Recently, only those with 480 points have been chosen.

Well I wish we had done this ALOT sooner .
We have been discussing this over a decade and should have done it then , but it is what it is add to that we have no family living there.

One or both of you will need to take a language test (either English or French). You'll also most likely need to get your education assessed. I would recommend you move over to the Express Entry section of the forum.

Yes based on that we do not qualify for express , only self employed - I am fluent in both English being my native an French , but my Dutch Husband only English . I did find my full time job as a horse trainer 35 years there and his aviation mechanic job also ... Well hmmm. :(

I REALLY didn't want to go to Norway to run a campground ( OMG) - husband wanted to do that before we met but I really thought this would be a productive alternative .. I have a bunch of trainer associates that moved there , but if we don't the we just don't .. we have grappled with Dutch and American rules before so we definitely know the score .

I cannot find anything on the entire website that is taking 9 years to process .

You need to spend more time on the CIC web site and become more familiar with the information there. To find processing times, go to the processing times part of the site:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/

And select "Economic Class" and then "Self Employed (Federal)".

And my mistake - it's actually down to 8 years now (96 months).

Believe me I do all the time . ALL the time .. just not quite sure if I fit into those categories listed that's all .
