Member of Parliament- one of the elected officials representing a single riding in the House of Commons.

It's roughly the equivalent of your US Representative in the House.

MPs are responsible for the people who live in their riding (geographic area).

Since you live in the US, you don't have a Canadian MP (unless you live part of the year in Canada in which case you need to look up who is the MP responsible for the area where you live in Canada part-time).

If your partner is Canadian, then the MP from riding that s/he lives in (or if outside of Canada, the last one they lived in, especially if you intend to return) will likely be responsive to certain requests for assistance.

What does the MP do for you?
I've noticed a lot of comments people saying "Talk to your MP" but what can they do in regards to your application?

Not really much, from what I gather. It seems the most helpful they can be is getting updates on your case faster than you yourself can. They cannot expedite the process or affect the outcome of applications.

Yes pretty much this. They can get an update with more details than what you could normally get.

Actually, I'm not sure it was entirely a coincidence, we called my husband's MP after waiting 4 months for SA on a US outland application. The MP called them 3 times over the next 2 days and the day after that we were finally issued SA. So I think it depends on how persistent ( subtext annoying possibly) your MP is. Because my application went basically from them having nothing on me to having my whole file. It even states on my eCAS that the application was received March 11 and SA was July 17th.
