Hi,
my husband got a temporary tax number because of our child tax benefits. He is currently with me in Canada with a visitor visa. His PR application outland is still in process.
Is the temporary tax number of any importance? A good sign? Can he maybe get a work permit? Or has it nothing to do with the PR application?

The importance of his TTN has nothing to do with his PR application, nor will it enable him to get a job. It was assigned for Tax purposes and without it you would not receive CCTB. He must also file taxes for this year claiming his income in Canada and he must report his world income if he does not you will not receive CCTB next year. This is an oxymoron, CIC says your a visitor, yet CRA says your a resident and must pay taxes go figure eh?

How did you go about getting the TTN. I too have 2 children, am getting married in Nov.and applying outland for my husband right after we are married. I cannot afford to lose my CCTB.

Hi, I didn't do anything, when applying for CCTB, they explained to me, that they will request this number, and only then will they be able to process it. Now he has one.
Why would you lose your CCTB? Are you already receiving?

Hi
I was worried about losing the CCTB because I read somewhere on this forum that some people had their CCTB stopped and/or that they now owed money back after marriage because their husband did not have a SIN. I was trying to find where I read that tread but now I can't.

The CCTB will be stopped and the Sales tax credit (atleast in ON it was the OSTC) so depending on province will say owing until a TTN is issued and the spouses world income for the corresponding year/years is reassessed. it took 3 months for our to be worked out and it seems that was the easiest as lost of people are still having problems... GL!

Why do they need to know his previous world income if he is no longer working? According to CRA website newcommers (he is still visiting at the moment but will file a tax return) only need to report world income for the period they have been in Canada. So why are they asking for his income from 3 years before we were married?

they told me they need his income from the past 12 months he worked outside of Canada, only if he does can they calculate how much CCTB I will get.

Just for the record, CIC says I am a visiting American, CRA says I'm a resident for tax purposes, it's an oxymoran but you gotta do what they want you to do, Anyway this is how it was explained to me over the phone with CRA. each tax credit is different... CCTB: what you are receiving for the child tax benefit in 2012 is actually based on what you made from 2010/2011. The CCTB benefit changes years in July so from Jan. 2011 to June 2011 you are receiving payments based on what you made in 2010 and in July these benefits switch over to what you made in 2011. as for other credits like the Ontario sale tax credit: you get married lets say may 2012 they go back a yr from then to may 2011 but what you are receiving is actually from 2009/2010 I know it's confusing but it's why they need the 3 years...

For the CCTB yes they only need the last year, but any other tax credits you are receiving will also be affected everywhere I read 3 years but when I called they told me over the phone just last year so it ended up messing other things up. When er filed they needed last 2 years because we were just getting ready to switch over in July.
