Hello, all.

We live in Minnesota, United States and my daughter has a study permit that expires at the end of July. She needs a couple more classes to finish her degree. We are trying to apply to extend her study permit, but are running into difficulty. I believe this is the form she needs to fill out: https://www.canada.ca/content/dam/ircc/migration/ircc/english/pdf/kits/forms/imm5709e.pdf
The problem is with Question 7: "Current Country or Territory of Residence". This question is auto populated with 'Canada'. Clicking on this field provides no other option besides Cananda. We cannot even delete it and manually type in United States.

Can anyone provide any suggestions on how to properly fill out this form? Or if there is another way she should be applying to extend her study permit?

Thank you for any assistance!

Is she in Canada now? You can’t extend a study permit if she is not in Canada. If she is in the US, she applies for a new study permit.

Really? Even if she has a valid study permit? She was in Canada up until COVID hit and they closed the borders, so she moved back home.

When will she complete her program? If her permit expires before completion then she will need a new one. An extension can only be completed and processed if she is in Canada.

Well, that makes everything we have been reading make more sense.

She will (hopefully) complete her program this summer term. Her last class will end in mid August, I believe. So, just beyond her current permit term.
I'll have her start the process for a new permit.

Thank you for your responses! I appreciate it!
