.....you can legally change ur last name to match your spouse's? Someone told me u have to reside in Canada as a permanent resident for 3 to 12 months before u can legally change ur last name. Is this true?
 
If you're married, you can likely just use the marriage certificate to change your ID. Most provinces name change processes (application etc.) do not include surname changes by marriage.

In any event, it's a provincial thing and depends on your province.

1. Except for Quebec, a wife can not change her surname to that of her spouse.

Then you can get new ID or just "assume" your married name. When asked for proof of the name change, your marriage certificate is what you need.

You will typically not be allowed to legally change your name to your married name.
