I've been living in Canada for more than 6 years, and my PR card has been recently renew. Also I recently left Canada for 30 days(A month). My question is how long can I leave Canada again and is it possible to leave Canada? For 3 years before my PR card expires in 2021.

You can't leave Canada for more than 1095 days in any rolling 5 year period. It doesn't matter what the expiry date of your PR card is.

Dear experts,

I landed in Canada on 26 December 2014 and stayed there for 2 weeks with my family, there after my wife and kids moved to Canada in July 2015 and since then are staying there. I, meanwhile carried on with my work in Qatar and fly once every 4 month for 2 weeks to Canada. I am planning to leave my current job on 31 December 2017 and move to Canada for good. Kindly advise whether I can extend my stay for a month or two beyond December 2017???. I have till date (between December 2014 -till date ) spend around 87 days in Canada (since my first entry). Can i count these 87 days minus 730 days as my legal stay days or I need to complete 730 days in whole??? I am a primary sponsor/applicant in my family. Can my family apply for citizenship after completion of their 3 years or do they have to wait for me to complete my 730 days and only after that will be eligible. Kindly advise..

The math looks pretty simple 730-87=643 days remaining to complete residency obligation, those days do not have to be accumulated in one go but anytime over the initial 5 years.

So you landed 12/26/2014 so your first 5 years will be reached 12/25/2019. If you quit your job 12/31/2017 you must complete 643 days of the 724 days in Canada between quitting your job and 12/25/2019. I may be out a couple of days with the math but near enough .

Whether is a good idea to stay on a few months after you quit your job is your decision but the closer it comes to showing the 730 days the possibility of questions exist when you come to renew your PR card. Plus you need to be convincing re the 87 days as well, remember the day you land and the day you leave also count.

As for your family their future application for citizenship would be based on them meeting the physical residence requirement and not affected by your status. The 3 years out of previous 5 years at application has not become effective yet by the way, hopefully sometime in the fall.

Thank you Bs65.

10-Jan-2018 to 25 December 2019 = 714 days. I have already spent 87 days in Canada, which means by 25 December 2019 i will be completing 714+87 = 801 days. This may give me buffer 60 odd days or 2 month...........But looks too close, as advised by you in your much appreciated post. I believe i should quit by December 31st.
On the contrary if I spend 2 more months extra then as long as I maintain proof of landing in and getting out, I hope its safe. In this case what proof is considered valid? Kindly advise
