Is there a certain time I have to be in Canada before I can get married there? I'm a uk citizen. Does it have to be announced a certain time before it happens or not?
Thanks in advance

If youre planning on marrying in Canada and applying inland, i highly not recommend it due to the very long processing times

My plan is to apply Outland (England). Do you know the average waiting time for an Outland application to be complete?

Spouse or common-law partner living outside Canada. United Kingdom : 14 month(s), includes assessment of sponsor: 53 days

But usually only takes half the time for applications.

No. You just have to get a marriage licence first (at least in Alberta) and if you really want to, you can get married on the same day! ;D

Just to clarify in case it's not clear to the OP, I believe that this waiting time refers to how long it takes to process 80% of applications, which is why dungle87 says that it's usually much faster than this time.

When you leave the UK to get married, be sure to take your ACRO Police Certificate (https://www.acro.police.uk/police_certificates.aspx – mine took only about 10 days to process, if I remember correctly) and a copy of your birth certificate, as both are required for your application. Also, you'll need proof of the relationship, so remember to take all the necessary stuff for that (e.g., photos, phone records, chat logs). I expect it's easier to get your medical done in Canada, as it has to be done by an authorised physician and there are many more in Canada than in the UK (see http://www.cic.gc.ca/pp-md/pp-list.aspx).

Will I need all of that proof and documentation with me just to get married? I will be going home to England and applying from there. At what point in the process will I need proof of relationship if not for the marriage itself? Which documents do I need for just the marriage itself? I know I'll need my birth certificate but that's all

the proof of relationship is a part of the spousal PR application, so it needs to be in the package you send in to apply for your spouse's pr. there are many things that can be used for "proof of relationship": pictures, online communication between you two, letters from friends/family, etc.

So I don't need the police check to be able to get married? I know is need it for the application but in terms of marriage, I won't need it?

Sorry, my understanding from other threads was that you'd be applying outland but from within Canada, so I meant that you'd need to have those documents with you. Apparently, in trying to help I've made things much more confusing!

No, not at all! I would've been applying Outland but from within Canada but the certificate won't be with me until I'm home because I'll only be in Canada for 28 days. Thanks for the help

Letters from friends/family? What kind of letter is this?

I married here in Canada last May 2016. I already have our marriage certificate with me. I enclosed in our application: pictures, online communication, cards, joint bank account, insurance showing that my spouse is my beneficiary, and investments.

I included 5 reference letters -- 2 from parents, and the rest from friends. These letters just verified their experience with us. The letter authors explained that they knew about our relationship and were happy about it. They are nothing serious, but from the eyes of a visa officer, they certainly make the relationship seem more authentic.
