Hi,

I am in a bit of a situation, I have realized that my study permit has expired, I have been struggling with depression and working on improving my mental health to the point where it totally slipped my mind to renew it, and now I'm totally freaking out. I have been advised to go back to my home country and re-apply for another permit as it may faster than a status restoration (which could take 4+ months) . What do you think? Has anyone been in a similar situation? (Note: before I got into a depressive state I was a good student and even had a full scholarship to study in Canada)
thank you so much :)

When did it expire?

After study permit expired you have 3 months of grace period for extension but within extension you have to restore your status also for that you have to make an explanation letter explaining why you are late? What was the situation?
Same thing happened to me my study permit expired on 30/7/2016 applied for extension and restoration on 2/11/2016 paper based and I got it on 17/02/2017. You must not leave Canada.

I am confused. You say I must not leave but an International Student Adviser at my university (who is an immigration consultant) told me that I am allowed to leave and apply for a new study permit from home.

Apply online it will be faster. Apply first then leave country you will get your study permit at your canadian residence. But you have to have valid student visa to re-enter in Canada otherwise you can not enter Canada l.

Applying for restoration and applying for a new SP are different. The latter will be as hard as your initial SP whereas the former will very likely be approved if you are still eligible. So you should apply for restoration while 90 day limit has not yet been reached. Do some more research on it and google these options. Good luck
