Help - non-resident returning to Canada

Prior to leaving Canada in August. My wife and I took the steps needed with the CRA to ensure we were permanent non-residents. We received a 2 year contract to teach overseas without the intention of returning.

Due to unforeseen circumstances my wife has returned in February to tend to a family emergency. She notified CRA about her return and reestablished her residential ties (license/health card etc.)
In terms of filing taxes, we both received income in Canada from January to august 18th 2016. I am currently still overseas teaching but will be returning back to Canada permanently to join my wife; which at that point I'll notify CRA.

My question is about filing taxes for the period we worked in Canada from January to August. Since my wife returned earlier than expected will this affect our tax return since she is my spouse.

Also I am not sure how to go about filing our taxes together now that I am overseas and she has returned.

Any insight or information would be really helpful.

Thank you
