Help! Got my study permit extension rejected and I don't know why :(

I've been in Canada for the past two years with a valid study permit. Unfortunately, because of my passport's expiry date, my study permit is due to expire in a few short weeks (rather than the usual four years). I applied for a study permit extension 31 days before expiration (it must be done a month before) and I received confirmation of my application submission the very same day.

Today, however, I received a very vague and unexplained "letter of withdrawal" from CIC. Here is what they wrote:

"Dear [renunu]: This refers to your online application for temporary resident visa in Canada. Our office is unable to process your application for a temporary visa. According to our records, your status in Canada will expire on [xx/xx/xxxx]. Before you can apply to obtain a new temporary resident visa to return to Canada, you must first obtain a decision on your legal status in Canada. If you are currently out of status, you may also have to pay restoration fees. To find out if you are eligible to extend or restore your status [...]."

I don't understand WHY or HOW I could be out of status, since I assume I did everything in the rulebook. Moreover, I'm so confused as to what "unable to process your application" means-- could somebody please explain or give me advice on how to move forward? My biggest fear is that now I will be deported-- for no legitimate reason!

How long is your study? Are you in Canada now?

What do you mean by study permit being usually four years. Permits are only as long as course or validity of passport, which ever expires first.

i am not sure but from the letter above it seems like they want u to get ur study permit approved before u extend ur visa. My guess is u applied for TRV first ...not sure what forms did u fill out?

@itstime: My studies are until December 2014. I am currently in Canada, I was in my home country for the summer but since the Canadian embassy was on strike there I had to return to Canada early so I could apply for an extension before the 30 days deadline.

As for the four years, that is what I meant. Most of my friends have four year study permits because their passports expire the year they graduate or the year after they graduate. My passport would have expired this month but I already got it renewed.

@mead: I will double check my application files but I did not realize that there was a difference between the two application processes, since when I started the forms I optioned to "extend my stay as a student."

ye just check see which form numbers u used ....its just a guess but may be they processed ur visa application first before study permit.....contact them and ask too what u need to do

My passport expires two years after my studies. My permit expires a few months after my study is completed.

So you are in canada now, you need to extend your study permit and the permit was rejected?

I'm not following you at all.

@ itstime: I think you're confused because of the lack of context; I started studying two years ago in 2011, my passport expired this month (just got it renewed) and so my study permit expired with it, like you said. Sorry if I confused you, my English becomes nonsensical when I panic.

@ mead: Turns out you're kind of right-- apparently, even though I came back to Canada to file my application, my main application form that I sent was titled "application for students OUTSIDE of Canada". I guess I must have rushed it too much and forgot to change it. This is probably the problem, so thank you!

Then apply for restoration of status [processing time is 14 weeks]
You can't study at this time.
Make sure you have renewed passport.
