I understand for the newly imigrated people in ONtario you dont get medical coverage for the first three months. We are expecting a child in Sep, and plan to land in July, what do we do to cover this? private health insurance? which company / plan / tips?

That's correct - you won't be covered by the health care plan for the first three months that you live in Ontario.

Private health insurance does not cover pregnancy because it is regarded as a pre-existing condition.

Based on when you are arriving, it sounds like you will have to pay for the pregnancy yourselves. You should budget $8K-$10K.

They would cover it but you have to prove that you live in AB first so you must arrange an address and get official mail delivered to you there, for example bank statements.

Thanks Leon,

I plan to land in Ottawa and give Calgary, AB permanent residence address, will this be acceptable for Alberta health insurance to be covered from day 1 including pregnancy coverage?

Appreciate sharing your expertise.

One more question Leon, we are moving from US and expecting birth of our second child end of August, so moving to calgary in eight month of pregnancy is some thing easy to manage, like finding gynea, appointment, facilities, (will be cesearian as well)? THanks

I don't know if giving a Calgary address for PR card is enough but what some ppl have done is open a bank account and get a statement printed right away with their Alberta address and that has been accepted. I do not know how easy it is to find a gyno on short notice but I am sure if need be, she can go have the baby at any hospital, they will not put her on the street.
