My passport will expire in 2017. At that time I will be in Canada. Is it okay if I mail it for renewal while Im still in canada? I mean the travel document will be on the old passport will that cause a problem?

For your info, copy all pages of your old passport before you renew it. Immigration loves to ask you about old passports and it's not good if you lose it.

What can I use as a proof to prove to the university that a travel document means i am a domestic student?

Generally they ask PR card for college admission, getting medical card, apply for driving license, jobs and opening bank account etc.
