My question is this. My wife and I are trying to be very organized with our move and we just sent some boxes of personal items and clothes but we're arriving in Canada in 3 weeks. What happens if our goods to folow arrive before we do? Will the boxes be held be held or will the person receiving the goods be charged duty or can we call cbsa and tell them we'll be arriving soon and our goods may arrive before us? Any ideas?

If you have sent them addressed to a third party, it is quite possible that they will be held in Customs pending payment of duty. The recipient would not be entitled to an exemption.

Would they notify the recipient in this case my mother that a package is being held for her? Could she not collect it and have us collect it when we arrive with our b4? It's just some clothes, purses and craft supplies. Nothing of high value nor new.What do you think?

As long as it's on your b4, you should be fine. I wondered the same thing and I will be sending mine right before I land so they arrive after me.

So if the boxes arrive before us and there is duty to be paid my mom should she just refuse the boxes and they will be sent back to cbsa right? From there could we then explain the situation when we arrive and with the b4 which will have the same items listed as what is in the boxes?

Exactly. It also says you can just pay the fees, or duties so you(your mom) can get the boxes right away and then apply for an adjustment (basically a refund). Once you show your paperwork with your b4 - goods to follow, and that it was signed and stamped or whatever by a border officer when you landed, there shouldn't be a problem!

After reading the link again, it seems your best bet is to have your mom pay the duties/taxes and for you to get an adjustment later.
If your mom receives them while you're not there and she tries to ask for a reassessment, she won't have a way to prove why there shouldn't be duty and taxes to pay on the items since they are not hers and she is not the one importing them.

Thanks for the help. Hopefully they arrive after us and this won't be an issue. If not then I'll do that; have my mom pay and then ask for a re-assesment. Maybe they won't even have duty on them. Like I said there's nothing of much value. Thanks again.
