The government might consider your stay before PR while applying for citizenship.
Thought of sharing.

February 25, 2016 – Ottawa, ON –Today, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister John McCallum introduced legislation to amend the Citizenship Act, providing greater flexibility for applicants trying to meet the requirements for citizenship and help immigrants obtain citizenship faster.

“The Government is keeping its commitment to repeal certain provisions of the Citizenship Act, including thosethat led to different treatment for dual citizens. Canadian citizens are equal under the law. Whether they were born in Canada or were naturalized in Canada or hold a dual citizenship,” said Minister McCallum.

Among the changes, the Bill: An Act to Amend the Citizenship Act, would repeal provisions that allow citizenship to be revoked from dual citizens who engage in certain acts against the national interest. All Canadians who commit crimes should face the consequences of their actions through the Canadian justice system.

]The Bill also proposes to reduce the time permanent residents must be physically present in Canada before qualifying for citizenship by a full year. Recognizing that immigrants often build an attachment to Canada before becoming permanent residents, the proposed legislation would credit applicants for the time spent in Canada as temporary residents or protected persons.

The age range to meet French or English language requirements and pass a knowledge test to qualify for citizenship, would change to 18-54 from 14-64. The changes support our goal of removing barriers for immigrants to build successful lives in Canada.

Good! +1 for you and Minister McCallum! ;)

Fantastic news! If the changes go through and we get PR, it would mean we could apply for citizenship in 2 years instead of 4!!

Why two years? 3 years! If so, we will be able to claim one year before becoming PR. They are not changing 4 years required for citizenship!

They're looking to change it so that your stay in Canada needs to be 3 years out of 5 instead of 4 years out of 6 and, along with the fact we can claim a year for the 4 years we have lived here for, means we can apply in around 2 years (assuming we do not leave Canada and live elsewhere in the next few years)

Here is the quote from the government website

"To help immigrants achieve citizenship more quickly, the Government is proposing to reduce the time required to be spent in Canada for citizenship for adults to three years (1095 days) within the five years before applying for citizenship. This will mean applicants can apply one year sooner than they can now. This offers greater flexibility for immigrants who may need to travel outside of Canada for various personal or work reasons"

THAT's great news for me! I've been in Canada and already feel Canadian, so why the wait!

Well, I hope that is true! I had heard that Harper might change the laws so we could claim one year but I didn't know he would also change 4 years to 3 years!!! I hope they do this!

I think it is not good news only for international students and temporary residents staying in Canada. It is good news for everyone then!

You mean Minister McCallum in Tradeau's Gov. Harper was the one who spent 10 years "protecting" Canada from immigrants, who his ancestors are some of them.
