Getting Work Permit/Visa after PGWP

I got a three year work visa and PGWP once I finished my undergraduate studies. During this time I decided I wanted to complete my Masters degree and got a Study Permit. Now that I have completed my Masters, I was able to get a full time job but my PGWP and Visa expire in 6 months. I can’t apply for the experiental class PR since I don’t have a years worth of work experience. Can anyone guide me on possible next steps?

Thank you!

Your employer needs to obtain an approved LMIA so that you can apply for a closed work permit.

I work at a large well known company in Toronto. Would I be able to obtain that from HR?
Depends on the company. There are many companies who aren't willing to go through the process. If you work for one of the big banks for example, they don't do LMIAs.

I can definitely find out. I will be eligible for the Ontario Provincial Program in January since I completed both my undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Canada.

1. One thing of interest here, the OP said s/he received a PGWP and then applied for a study permit to study for a Masters. The study permit would negate the PGWP so it would appear the OP was working without permission.

Not exactly. The CIC agents and the companies background checks both validated that it is alright. I wouldn’t have done the Masters program otherwise.

Just a warning about the CIC agents - they are useless for all but the most basic questions and give out massively wrong answers regularly. They should never be relied upon as an information source - more like a 'fake news' source. So their validation sadly has no value at all.

Well I have left and entered the country with PGWP recently (after the study permit expired) and had no issues. Plus like I was saying the company would not have hired me if the PGWP did not go through their background checks...

I agree with you, they tell you one thing and its another.

wanted to respond to this and confirm that this is not an issue. During this time I received the OINP certificate, but I also applied for the PR and have been able to get a Visitor Record to extend my stay. So what I was told by the CIC and the immigration lawyers was not fake news. Felt it was important to post this here for anyone thinking their PGWP will get “removed” because they got a Study Permit later one.
