Hello there,
i am new here and tried to find an answer to my questions.
After all the reading I finally have to create an post of my own.

So here is my issue:
I am a 24 year old German, currently living and studying in Germany.

My plan is to move to Canada and live and work there.

I am currently in an apprenticeship program (Ausbildung), that is soon to be finished (the program took me 3 years) in logistics as an freight forwarder.

My plan is as follows:

-get a temporary workers permit
-get a truck drivers Licence (CDL) (I pay out of my own pocket- the money is already planned ca.10-12k can dollars)
- get hired by an canadian employer and start working/living.

If that is for me in the long run than i might even apply for an PR.

I am planning to make the move with 23k canadian dollars- to pay for the CDL- small flat and a cheap car.

Now the question is:
Does this work?
All the reading makes me crazy, one side says I can't get a CDL licence with an workers permit- the other side says yes.
Than one side says that the canadian company HAS to fill out an LIMA for me- even though i have my temporary workers permit.

I really really hope to find some help here.

best regards in these though times
Phil

How are you planning on getting a temporary work permit? Generally speaking you cannot get a work permit unless you already have a job offer and approved LMIA from an employer in Canada.

Given your age, you can enter the IEC / Working Holiday Visa pool, hope you are selected and qualify for a one year open work permit that way. If selected, that would get you a one year open work permit. Anything beyond that would require an employer to give you a job offer and an approved LMIA. However note that this program is currently on pause due to COVID-19.

Hello,
thanks for the quick answer!

So I planned to get an open work permit due to me having strong reasons to move back to germany like family etc.
IF however this does not work, than I would consider other options such as getting an employer specific work permit OR the option you just mentioned.

Now the question is- without an work permit, i can not get an CDL licence as far as i am concerned?
So the employer is requiered to give me an job offering- to get me to an temporary workers permit- before i even have the CDL licence?

I know there is a trucker shortage in Canada but i doubt that many employers go that far.
Now keep in mind that everything is cristal clean, no criminal records or anything- i have an normal german driving licence (cars only up to 3,5 tons gross weight)- I heard it is valid in canada for up to one year, before I need to pass an canadian test.

I don't understand what you mean when you say "So I planned to get an open work permit due to me having strong reasons to move back to germany like family etc.". Open work permits are only granted in very specific circumstances. You can't just apply for one. You have to either apply through a program (like IEC/Working Holiday Visa) or you have to meet one of the exception criteria (e.g. have a spouse who is currently studying in Canada as an international student on a study permit).

I can't answer your questions regarding CDL.

Ok thank you so far this clears up the fog a bit.

Now i hope someone can help me regarding the CDL/trucking section.

On wether it is likely or unlikely if someone hires me and does the job to get me an employer specific work permit.

But thank you so far, you helped me there big time! Especially with the Working Holiday thing

Just keep in mind currently all invitations in the IEC program for foreign nationals are on hold due to the pandemic

Don't worry this is none of my concern, i propably forgot to mention that i plan to move next year- so 2021 will be my year :)

Just mentioning it , because the Government negotiates how many Visas are issued per country , each year . If the unemployment rate in Canada is sky high , if history repeats it self , that could drastically affect how many visas are issued to foreigners
Always have a plan B
Good luck

Well Plan B would be... to still be in Europe waiting to get to north america.
I cant unsee the rockies and culture+ love hockey and attending NHL games on a regular basis (though expansive) sounds like a dream.

So i am desperate, but still not foolish enough to throw myself off the cliff. I hope Canada can recover fast.

Would also warn you that with driverless trucking becoming a reality sooner rather than later this may not be the best choice of careers. Yes there is a shortage of long haul truckers but this is a difficult lifestyle especially for a young person and even more if you are single. There is no joining a hockey league because you won’t be home most of the time. Canada and the US are huge countries compared to the EU. These trips are usually multiple days. Unless you own the truck your pay isn’t great either.
