Exactly. Show at least double that - you need to also have funds to cover flight tickets, COVID tests and quarantine costs, Accomodation/board etc.

but for ex. if a student has paid the full year fees + has GIC

You want to show that you have a $10k plus your fees. There is no set amount but you want to show as much of your own funds to show you can afford all your schooling and fees.

If you have paid full 1st year fees and have GIC, then 20K additional should be fine for 1 person.
