My Canadian Journey Part 2 - LANDING

Hello family,

So sequel to my last post with my testimony of getting my PPR after been banned from Canada for 5 years for misrepresentation, I would like to share my landing experience with the house.

Due to the expiry date of my medicals, I had to travel before july 3rd so I got a ticket from priceline.com (british airways and air canada) for 1373$ and I prepared to travel. My final destination was Edmonton but I had to go via Heathrow and Toronto. My landing took place in Toronto.

I went to the immigration officers booth and he checked my COPR and was checking for something on the system. He later returned after 5 minutes and said it was all good. I wasnt even asked for the pictures of jewerly and proof of funds and B4 forms and my bags were not even searched as they were checked in all the way to edmonton (I dont know if anyone has experienced this???

Anyways so Im in Edmonton now. I am yet to go get my sin no and Alberta health card.

I want to thank my Almighty and all powerrful God once again because I could have still been waiting for medicals or a response if the cap hadn't been full for FSW 2014 (my app got to CIO on the 29th) and returned. The express entry was not without is challenges but I have come out of the challenge a winner.

God has beautified me with a success that is obvious for all to see and hear about. As the house says IT HAS ENDED IN PRAISE. My earnest prayer for all waiting for one update or another from AVO or those who are apprehensive over their applications is that you stand firm and see the victory of the lord. Your desires will be met In Jesus name and indeed...

IT SHALL END IN PRAISE .

Our Landing Story.... Started packing our Kaya about a month ago and concluded on Sunday (well not sure u can ever finish packing becos of some last minute things u might need to stuff here and there). Our flight was at 8.40pm on Tuesday so I checked in online and we left de house around 3 and headed for the airport with our 11 bags and 10 carry on luggages (sent some 4 bags on Monday via Nipost) and then began a series of Favour and events. Our bags got scanned and the custom officer scanning asked me what was in de bottle inside one of the bags. I smiled and told him it was peppersoup ingredients. He looked @ me and said okay o. Next stop was weighing the bags. I had an extra bag which weighed 35kg and 5 other bags in excess of the allowable 23kg per bag. I was already prepared to pay becos I no too like tori but God had other plans. One of the guys @ the airline said pay for the extra bag and for only 2 of the excess @ $50 each instead of $80 each. I was saved $300. We moved past immigration and was waiting to board when I got a news alert: Terrorists Strike @ Istanbul Ataturk Airport. My jaw dropped and I said a prayer within me becos our flight was with Turkish Airlines. I didn't tell my husband because his next reaction would have been "Cancel the flight" etc. Surprisingly, we still boarded and after being on de plane for about 45mins we were told to disembark and go back to de boarding area. After waiting for like an hour, the officials mentioned that we would not be flying that night becos of the Terrorist attack at the Istanbul airport and were going to lodge us at an hotel until they were sure we could fly. Some passengers refused to go to the hotel and requested for ticket refunds. My children were visibly upset and husband after much talk said we should go to the hotel. The time was 11.47pm. I was tired, upset but thankful. Just as my husband was coming back with an airport taxi, we were told that we should go back to the boarding area. Passengers that had gone were called to come back. We didn't leave Nigeria until 1.30am or thereabout. The journey was smooth and my children were in cloud 9. My little gal slept throughout the almost 7hrs flight. Fast forward to Istanbul.... The Airport was jam packed. If not for the news and cancellation of some flights, I'd have said nothing happened becos pple just dey waka up and down. Our initial layover of 8 hours had been reduced to less than 4 becos of the initial delay in Nigeria. Our flight to Toronto was initially delayed for an hour but was reduced to about 30mins. We landed on the Canadian soil. We went thru immigration, told them we had some foods which they didn't mind. We signed our Copr and the lady said "Welcome to Canada, You're now a PR". Service Canada had closed so we couldn't do our SIN. By the time we got to the baggage claim, ours was the only load there. We got a porter who wanted to play smart with cart charges but I showed him that me sef be Naija. Got into the car after 150mins at the airport!! Canada is indeed a beautiful country. We're still in hibernating mode but so far so good.......

This is a dream come true for our family and I use it as a point of contact for every expectant applicant. Your dreams will be fulfilled beyond measures and God's mercies, grace, favor will seek us all out.

Hello friends, it has finally ended in praise. My family and I left Nigeria on the 27th June on board Ethiopia Airlines to Edmonton through Addis Ababa then to Dublin, Ireland where we refueled, then to Toronto and finally landed in Edmonton at about few minutes past 3pm.

Canadians are undoubtedly friendly and good people. At Toronto airport after concluding our landing formalities, I observed without fail that we were not asked for our CoPR and more so it escaped my mind to submit it. We had left the immigration desk to reclaim our luggages and then checked them in into Air Canada after getting our boarding pass before it got dawn on me that the landing process was incomplete. I had to go back to the immigration desk to conclude the landing process but was unable to locate the immigration desk where I was initially attended to due to how big the airport is. It was really stressful for me and my wife running around with lugages and the children.

Eventually we were able to get another immigration personnel who assisted and concluded the process within few minutes and we were able to catch our flight to Edmonton.
At the moment we have registered for our SIN, registered for healthcare, registered for library use, gotten accommodation, started the process for our child tax benefits, we have opened an account and also gotten a car to buy, thanks be to God for his faithfulness and more so to KB and hubby for being our host. God bless them for me.

Welcome to Canada

Hi Daniel, welcome to Canada. You can take your copr with you to any Service Canada office when going for your SIN. All aspects of your landing not completed at the airport will then be concluded. It's no big deal, congrats again.

Hi Ogaolopa, the ball is entirely in your court. Your age has nothing to do with your ability to find and build a productive and great career here. It is against the law for any employer to ask your age in this country. I came with over 13 years banking experience in a specialised field. It seemed daunting at first to fit into the system, trying to find how my skills in fraud investigation can be applied here. As you can see, I have experience working with bank regulators/police in solving financial crime and recovering funds. I then sought out Nigerians via LinkedIn who have landed here as well as others in my target sector and slowly built a relationship with them, finding out industry trends and how best to make my self attractive professionally. I also attended training programmes which helped me to gain understanding of how things work here and get networking opportunities but above all, God was faithful. As I was attending the programs, I would get back home each day and share with my wife all I learnt. My wife took the tips and strategies and applied it in her job search and got a fantastic job in finance before me! See where Joshua overtook Moses :) We only used our Nigerian experience in our resumes. This breathrough of course showed me I was on the right path and shortly after, I landed a management role in a position similar to what I was doing back home but a far higher level. I am considered an expert because I come from Nigeria with our peculiar 419 and other financial crimes ;) and because of how I packaged my self.

You can do it as well, don't be discouraged at all. One of my investigators is a former army officer from Bangladesh and he's served with UN peace keeping force in Sierra Leone, he's now working in a bank as an investigator. He understood the value of rebranding his skills and experiences and packaged himself accordingly. There's also another investigator in my team who has become close to me and opened up that she's 56 years old! You can equally join the federal, provincial or regional police here or other security outfits and even companies in their security departments. Once you land, avoid the company of people who are comfortable 'managing' anything just to pay the bills, seek out those who are striving for greater things. I don't despise the days of humble begninnings, not at all but I know that Almighty God created me for great things so I come with the mindset to compete for the best jobs and earn the best pay. White skin does not mean they are better, infact your coming with foreign experience can be a plus! Join a specialised training/bridging program, not the general ones for newcomers. There is value in specialised newcomer training if you know what you are looking for and how to apply the knowledge obtained. With perseverance, patience and above all, God's favor, you and your wife can make it well here. I've only spent one year in this country but the heights I have attained and the achievements I have recorded, it could only have been God. The same and even more can be your testimony as well, cheers :)
For those not landed yet, this write up is not making sense yet. You will appreciate it more when you land. All the plans I thought I made before coming seems not to want to see light o day but th devil is a liar. If not that I said bye for some time to Naija, maybe I would have joined the next available flight home.

Oga PH, thanks for this sharing with us, you really don't know how many more people you have positively impacted. It just personally showed me am not alone. Everyone will experience it but my prayer is that it should not be long and it should end in testimonies just like yours and even better. Amen
