For how long must the passport submitted be valid?

My passport is set to expire in February 2011. I expect to get a passport request as early as late April 2010 for my PR visa.

Couple questions:

1. Is there a requirement for how long a passport must be valid when submitted for the PR visa?

2. Can I renew my US passport now to avoid this problem?

Hi,

As per my understanding there should be minimum 6 months validity for the passport.
The validity of Canadian PR visa is upto the date of expiry of the passport or ONE year from the date of medical exam, which ever comes earlier. If you can get the passport renewed before the PPR, it is better. Otherwise, you have to cross the boarder for landing at the earliest convenience after getting the PR visa. I renewed mine and my wife's passport one year early, before PPR; not from US.

Is it okay if we sent passport that expires in 11 months but cic requires passport to be 12 months? I'm getting worried.
