Hi All,
Here's my situation. I am due for Oath taking on May 23rd in Surrey. I was sweating about getting my Oath date before my flight to my only sisters wedding in Ireland on the 26th, and now I just realized my PR card will be taken away- right?? I have my Passport from Ireland which is a visa exempt country but I'm not sure I will be able to return with that because of the Esta. Anyone have any advice or suggestions. I will call the passport office on Monday and see what they advise.

Thanks and good luck to everyone!

since you have a visa-exempt other nationality/passport, how about return via USA ??
Get to USA, then travel by road (privately) to Canada and CBSA can let you in if u show them your certificate.
You can bus it to the border, and then walk thru etc and then bus it again to surrey, if that works.
I know its a pain but it could be worth it if u don't wanna miss the wedding.

and/or

Try to apply passport same day as the oath (take a chance!), take all paperwork and have your guarantors ready on-call and any evidence of your sister's wedding........hopefully they will help expedite/express issue passport.

Or, fly to Ireland, attend the wedding, and then apply for Cdn passport at the Cdn embassy/consulate nearest you which has passport services.
Not sure if that is doable.

Hi,
My husband had same situation got his Canadian citizenship certificate on 29 of July and his flight was 31. He applied for the passport next morning. The passport office told him it will take 24 hours so your name would appear on the system, he received his passport in the morning of 31. You have to show yiur ticket to the passport office. Good luck!

Thank you both for the help!! I think my best bet will be to apply for my passport on the 24th showing my flight ticket! Fingers crossed. Again thanks for the help as I didn't realize passports could be issued so quickly.

How desperate are you for your citizenship ceremony to be held on the 23rd? If your PR card still has a while to expire why not call and say you are not available that day for the reason you need to travel on the 26th. They will give you another date a few months down the line. Maybe thats an option?

I would rather do this. Minimal risk and stress, if you have PR validity.

Yes I think that's my only option. I went to passport office today and they told me it takes 3 days to upload me on system after Oath taking.

I would postpone my citizenship oath to a later date unless there is a reason for urgency.

I booked the flight based on the 12 month timeline and it happened in 5 months ( not complaining). Yes I think I will see if that's a possibility. It's a bit complicated because we applied for my wife for a visa to enter my country ireland which is based on my original dates , it's quiet the process to change that. I'll try postpone with Vic I guess or change my return flight to enter through the US.

Choosing between Changing oath date or changing flight plan to fly in via US, I would go for the 2nd option.
The whole citizenship process is stressing enough that I'd get it out of the way first.

Update- at my Oath taking- I explained my situation to one of the officers, she was really helpful and put me in the system right away. I was able to apply for my passport the same day as the Oath it will be available for pick up in just over 24 hrs.
Disclaimer- I am not sure if everyone will have the same experience- I choose to roll the dice and thankfully it worked out! Good luck to all in a similar situation.
