Okay so I plan on traveling to canada next month with a friend of mine, he plans on staying there for 2-3 weeks and i want to stay there for 3-6 months. Now my question is what should I do about the return date for my ticket? Also can i tell them that i plan on being there on vacation/ looking for colleges to study at is that a valid reason why they should let me stay there for a few months?

You should book a return flight that leaves Canada within the six months you're allowed to stay.

Yes - when you arrive in Canada, it's entirely possible you will be required to show that you have sufficient funds to pay for a visit of several months.

I'm not sure why you would be visiting a panel physician. This part of your question doesn't make sense to me.

Would i have to prove that i have the funds to survive there / visit a panel physician
You suppose correctly: at POE you will have to explain to a border ofiicer your purpose of visiting for 6 months, what kind of ties in your home country could quarantee you will go back after stay in Canada, to show enough funds to support yourself for 6 months(including health insurance) WITHOUT working in Canada(you are not allowed to work without WP).

However, you do not need to visit any panel physician because you are will not be allowed to stay in Canada longer than 6 months.
