Hello everyone.

My want my mom to stay with me in Canada for a year. She has a multiple entry TRV. Based on that, she can stay for about 6 months (180 days) with a possibility of extending her stay for another 6 months (180 days).

So my question is: I am planning to buy return tickets for her. So can I book a return ticket with a return date of a year or do I have to show a ticket with a return date within 6 months and then extend the ticket date once she has been approved for an additional 6 months stay?

I wish to avoid extending the ticket date as it proves to be costly as well as a hassle.

How long she is allowed to stay on the initial entry will depend on the officer she meets at the POE + later, it would depend on the approval to extend her stay. It is also possible that she could be asked to show the return tickets when she arrives at the POE.

IMO, it won't be a good idea to book tickets with a return date of a year later

You may also find the airline uncooperative at check in with a one year return flight. Their system will indicate a maximum 6 month stay with a TRV, and ultimately refuse boarding.
