I'm an American citizen and my wife is an Canadian citizen. I haven't yet applied for PR status, but plan to doing that in the near future. My question is how to we do our taxes? I'm completely lost on how we should file. I was told that since it's our first year married, I can still file as single in the states? If anyone can shed light on this, it will be greatly appreciated

Does your Canadian wife lives in Canada and paying her taxes? If not, wait until both of you lives in Canada and then file your taxes.

Yes, my wife is currently living in Canada. Are we required to pay in both countries? Can her or I file as single until I'm a PR of Canada?

I don't know anything about US taxes.

Your wife need to tick the box for married, show the date you were married, your name and SIN (if any), and your income for 2011. Then she completes her return as normal.

If you were living in Canada in 2011 you will likely do the same.
