Dears,

I am a new immigrant landed in Nov 2014. Do I need to file my first tax return in coming March. I have no income in Canada as yet. Please tell me which particular form/ forms shall I be submitting, attach link if possible. Is it correct that being a first timer, I can't do it online !

Any other suggestions/ tips for a first timer will be appreciated.

Thanks

Just to piggy back on this as I'm in a almost similar situation. I landed back in September stayed in MTL for about a week did complete some paperwork then took off back to the U.S. where I currently work (am a U.S. citizen) will definitely file taxes in the States but since I didn't work in Canada can/should I file taxes without income? Can that in anyway shape or form affect my future immigration status in Canada. I know people filing U.S. Taxes but living in other countries.

This isn't correct. The requirement to file tax returns is based on taxes owing, not residency.

u r right but for the new immigrant to claim chaild benefits/gst HST/ and other benefits, they must have to file even ZERO return. see CRA explanation for the same
------------------------------------------------------------
Even if you have not received income in the year, you have to file
a tax return so that the CRA can determine if you are eligible for
the goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST)
credit, or if you or your spouse want to begin or continue
receiving the Canada child tax benefit and payments from certain
related provincial or territorial programs.
For more information, see “Do you have to file a return?” in the
General Income Tax and Benefit Guide.
If you lived in Quebec on December 31, 2014, you may have to file
a separate provincial tax return. For more information, visit the
Revenu Québec website at www.revenuquebec.ca or
call 1-800-267-6299.

I agree that it may often be of benefit for new immigrants to file a tax return when they do not owe taxes. However this is a choice that can be made, not a requirement.
