Hi everyone!

After our landing mid of last year (2017), me and my wife went back to our country of origin because I have to fulfill the remaining year from my work contract (outside Canada) but our kids are in Canada with our relatives. We visited them last Christmas and this year my wife will be in Canada this June which is after the tax season and I'll follow in summer.

So both of us will not be in Canada within the tax season:

1. Is it possible to file our first tax outside Canada via online through CRA website or the Embassy?

2. Can we file it ourselves or is it required to hire an accountant or someone authorised by the government?

3. And payment via telegraphic transfer or via bank deposit?

Hope to hear your advises regarding my questions.

Thank you in advance!

1. You can try to file online using one of the Net E-File soft wares which is also free that is listed on the certified for CRA tax filing.
2. You can file by yourself
3. If you do owe money to CRA, you can pay online through your bank account

Hi Wonderland_1010, I just checked here... https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/e-services/e-services-individuals/netfile-overview/eligibility.html

It says:

You can’t use NETFILE to file your tax return if: you are filing an income tax and benefit return for the first time with the CRA and the CRA does not have your complete date of birth on record;

:(
Right you landed last year. Then you will have to get someone for you to file your taxes. You can ask one of your relatives to go to an accountant to file your taxes since its your first time

pie_vancouver , since our dependents/daughters are in Canada we have to :( :)
Dependents are not a direct requirement to file ITR, CRA has a list if one is required to file or not, if you want to claim refund for taxes overpayment (in your case, no) or if you want to claim GST/HST credit, then you should file, but if you don't owe taxes and you don't want to claim GST/HST credit, you are not required to file.

You cannot file taxes online with CRA since this is your first time but you can use one of the free/paid software to prepare your taxes and then submit returns via mail. I did same in 2016 to file my 2015 returns.
