Hi Guys and Gals,

I have been lurking in this forum for sometime now. I was hesitant to join(?) or at least make a comment since I am not a CPA but a tax lawyer. I have 2 years of tax practice in one of the Big Fours and I am hoping I can use my previous experience to engage in a job somewhat related to tax. I just would like to know if there is a possibility for me to get into any of the options you have presented here (eg CGA, CA). My ultimate dream is to work for the Canadian government, hopefully in their fiscal policy or collection department. Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks thanks.
Tapos ka naman siguro ng BSA so pareho lang tayo ng educ qualifications... ala naman bearing siguro ang lisensya. At lahat tayo kailangan mag-enrol ng tax subjects nila dahil iba ang taxation laws natin.

Hahaha. Actually nope. I am not a Business Administration graduate. My pre-law is Hotel and Restaurant Administration. Then I took up law. Sa HRA naman sa UP, medyo 40% naman ng subjects are into the "administration" side of the course. I dont know sa ibang schools kung ganun din. So madami akong management subjects. My accounting is up to financial accounting. As to tax, well, medyo complete naman ako sa law school nyan and I must admit I love doing tax work, specially analysis of financial position. Yeah, iba ang tax laws nila but the concept and principles are basically the same. Siguro mas marami lang silang tax credits na allowed (like house rental ata plus house renovation expense, i think) plus they call other tax terms differently like sales tax for VAT. I dont know nga how to approach job hunting sa Canada eh. If I can get into tax, why not. I love doing it.

May chance ba na I can take up the courses that you discuss here? Thanks thanks

hmmmnn, code 0632 is accommodation service managers, but u said u r a tax lawyer. i wonder who the principal applicant is.

but anyway, i think u can still do the tax thing in canada. kelangan lng tlga to have your credentials evaluated first. if u plan to pursue CA in ontario this link will help u http://www.settlement.org/site/ecareermaps/ca/path/path4.html

yakang-yaka mo yan. u were once with the big 4 as u said. malaking bagay din yan.

good luck!

kng sa ICAO ka mag assess, no need na sealed envelope, basta orig copy and may seal ng university.

pagka alam ko, sealed envelope ang TOR once it u have it assessed by other assessment bodies like CES and WES

have a good day ahead!

Naku, thanks for the confidence ha. I am beginning to chicken out na nga eh. The principal applicant is my husband. Ayan sa 0632, medyo mga 5 years na rin siya as a manager in a 5 star hotel so I am not really worried on a possible job for him. Ako lang talaga since I am in some sort of crossroads whether to actually go into legal or taxation when we eventually migrate.

I am hoping talaga that my stint in one of the Big Four will be helpful when I apply. I actually left 2 years ago because I wanted to take care of my baby. I am now contemplating on going back just to have that stated in my resume. Hehe.

Hindi kasi Ontario ang punta namin eh. We plan to settle sa Vancouver sana kung papalarin or Calgary. Same lang ba certification sa Ontario for those two Cities I mentioned. Would you know?

Thanks thanks.

sino kaya may planong mag CA dito? ako lng ba ??? ??? ???

i am browing the ICAO website, and found out na nakakawindang tlga ang requirements

some of the requirements to be registered as a student are as follow:

Education
 An official transcript of all university courses you have taken as part of your degree. An
official transcript has the official stamp or seal of your university. Photocopies of
transcripts are not accepted.
 A university syllabus or course calendar from your university describing the courses you
completed. If this document is not in English, you must send as well a notarized
translation of course descriptions for all courses you completed.

hay naku po! syllabus per subject

and I was an undergrad more than 10 years ago, san kaya ako makapaghalukay ng mga syllabus na to :-[ :-[ :-[

Naku ganito ang requirements nila? Lahat ng subjects? I requested before when i planned for degree assessment for Australian immigration kaso di ko itinuloy. I have with me course sylabbus for my subjects na related to acctg, law, taxation, bus, eco but not all. Yayyy! Andami nun! Saka ang mahal magrequest ng copy per subject plus sa school ko dapat punta ka sa college (like college of law, college of eco, college of acctg. etc) na responsible :(

i quoted this post from gladicame, a pinoy CGA student from this link: http://lbautista.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=how&action=display&thread=4982&page=1

Just like perper mentioned, there are other accounting designations recognized in Canada.

Chartered Accountants (CA) -concentration of training is in the field of public practice (auditing). You need to have 2 years (correct me if I'm wrong) training in a CA firm and pass their written exam.

Certified Management Accountant (CMA) - as the title implies they are management accountants. Don't know much how the program goes.

Certified General Accountant (CGA) - a student can choose his/her specialization (when you reached PACE level). It could be any of this fields - government, corporate, public practice, IT or taxation. Aside from passing all the exams, you also need to satisfy the experience requirement before you can get the coveted designation. This means that as your level in the program progresses so is your work experience.

You can challenge the exams if you want but not recommended. Canada is still taking baby steps towards international standards, so some standards that you know and currently uses are actually not accepted in Canada. It will be very confusing to a student who plans to challenge the exams. I'm talking based on what I had experience so far.

You can usually take a maximum of 4 courses in a year (1 for each sem). If you have to finished 12 courses (subjects for us pinoys) that means you can have your designation in 3 years time (if you satisfied the experience expectation). I actually tried this on my first year but it felt like suicide because I worked full time. Now I only take 2 courses a year. This is the only way I can achieve balance in my life without giving up my dream of becoming a designated accountant.

All the fruits that you reap in the future is worth every hardships that you have to go through. You can actually taste the fruits even before you can affixed the title to your name.

CGA is not a matter of intelligence but determination. If you think you have what it takes then go for it. Mahirap pero kaya at di ka magsisisi.

PS
CPA means certified payroll accountant and not in anyway viewed as in the same level as the other 3 designations.

and this one (from the same sharer):

When I had my assessment done, this is what I submitted - photocopy of transcript of records, resume and a copy of my PICPA ID. I paid the fee then wait for the evaluation. I received it within a month.

The evaluation stated the courses that I get credit for and recommendation of courses that I can be enrolled in for that school year. There are 4 semesters in a year. They gave recommendation for all 4 sems. It was only after the first semester that I decided to enrol. I enrolled in all 3 remaining courses. After my second course I was exhausted and felt like dropping the 3rd course but decided that I would be wasting money if I did, so I persevered. I took a break after the 3rd course to re-energized.

Lesson learned: if I enrol in one course after the other, I won't have a chance to do advance reading on my next course which is badly needed in class discussions. CGA classes starts right after the exam week. Walang time off. This would have been okay if I'm single and didn't work full time.

Another tip for those who are planning to enrol, if you have an option to enrol the course in a university and have it credited by the CGA, do so. At the university, part of your marks (grades for us pinoys) will come from attendance, quizzes, midterm and of course the final exam. At the CGA no matter how well you did with your weekly assignments, that won't count towards your final grade (but for courses in levels 1 to 3 your marks on online assignment will count towards your final mark).

Also networking among fellow students helps a lot. Make use of the resources offered by CGA - online tutor, online classes, etc. They're all there to help you through. Some lecturers are kind enough to give out their phone numbers or personal email to students just in case they have questions.

:-X :-X :-X
