I've received news that my father passed away. I need to attend the funeral ASAP. Problem is that I haven't got the PR card just yet (landed on July 16). I heard a lot that if we cross USA-Canada border by using rented vehicle, there's no PR card needed. All we need to do is present passport and CoPR. Has anyone use this arrangement to re-enter Canada? Please advise. Thank you.

I'm sorry to hear about your father.

If you hold a visa exempt passport, then you can return to directly Canada without your PR card and without going to the US first.

If you hold a non-visa exempt passport, then you need either your PR card or a travel document to re-enter Canada directly. You can only apply for a travel document from outside of Canada. Otherwise you can do as you've described and fly to the US, then re-enter Canada by land in a private vehicle using your COPR.
