It's next to impossible to find a family doctor in the GTA. Most have too many patients and waiting lists.

You may want to consider using a clinic instead (like MCI Medical Clinics) where you aren't necessarily seen by the same doctor each time but they will keep all of your information on file and have your medical history in one place.

Based on my experience, this tool isn't that useful. My husband filled out a request four years ago and all he gets every six months from Ontario is a letter saying that no doctors are available.

Could be. But there should be other tools too.

In BC I found my family doctor though https://www.cpsbc.ca/
I didn't find mine using any websites. I found mine during grocery shoppings :)

I think that's the only way to do it in the GTA since there's such a chronic shortage here. Either that or a friend / family member referral.

two sure shot ways to get family doctor.

1) Make a list of all GP in your area; visit there office personally(on phone they are always full )

2) Enrol on health connect which is a govt. initiative and they will arrange a family doc for you within a month.

Family doc has lot of benefits and I think you should do it

We got one based on first approach

Good Luck

Again, I disagree that option #2 works. My husband signed up 4 years ago and still hasn't been matched up (although he receives letters from them a few times a year telling him they're still looking). I have a number of friends (all living in the GTA) who had the same experience. There simply aren't enough GPs in the GTA. Finding one on your own is the only realistic option.

@ scylla I have no reason not to blv you as if something has worked for me is not necessarily work with you too. I got call from Healthcare 3 weeks after enrollment but by that time i already got my GP.

Also i hope you are not filtering on basis of language or ethnicity, that make finding doctor more tough. I did the same mistake earlier I thought a doctor from my home country would be better but later on I enrolled at a clinic with doc from north European and I am glad that the doc is very nice.

one way is to check the hospital website as they update if any of there doc are accepting patient.

here you go one example http://www.stjoe.on.ca/patients/accepting_patients.php

good luck

I have been getting one of those letters from Health Care Connect for the last year and some odd months as well. I found out at work from a lady that moved to my town less than a year ago that she was connected with a doctor within her first 6 months. I have a feeling they work on a needs-basis, and as I have no immediate health care "needs", I am sitting somewhere at the bottom of the list, whereas she was bumped closer to the top because she is diabetic and has several resultant issues dealing with.

I needed to get a prescription, however, (for something I purchased OTC in my home country), so I went to the Emergency room of my local hospital, and waited it out until I saw a doctor. It took about two hours, but most of a good book and some stale magazines later, I walked out with my prescription.

I was also prevailed upon to have a medical examination by my Canadian co-workers who were horrified to discover I had never had this examination before, whereas they considered it a routine health care matter. I eventually was able to have it done through a community service programme, the staff agreed to do it because they too were surprised I had never had it done before, although I am older than their general care cohort.

For now, I am content with these "work-around" solutions, because I take care of my health through exercise and a fairly decent diet, and have few complaints aside from a cold/flu maybe once a year. It matters more to me that my husband, who has a chronic condition, receives good care, and that at least it looks like people with greater need are getting seen to.
