Hello,

I currently have a 2-year open work permit through IEC which ends in January 2018. My common-law partner is sponsoring me to remain in Canada and I would like to apply to extend my work permit at the same time, just in case my PR doesn't come through before my current permit ends.

On the "Worker (In Canada Applicant)" document checklist, it states that "if you are a participant in the International Experience Canada (IEC) program, provide health insurance covering the intended extension to your length of stay in Canada."

I am confused by this as even though I am currently here through IEC, I do not know how much the temporary extension would be. It would depend on how long it takes for my PR to come through...

Also, I have an NS health card and I am covered on my common-law partners health insurance...

Does anyone have any experience with this or have the answer?

I don't want to send it all off and have it returned to me!

Thanks in advance!

Hi there, if you are on an IEC, it's not extendable. You will be applying for a completely new work permit (the OWP that's offered in conjuction with the inland spousal sponsorship app). If you think of it as a new work permit application, not an extension, that will help with some confusing wording on the application forms.

The application needs to be included in the same envelope as your PR app. Not sure if you are filling out the right forms or not. This is the correct application package: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...onditions-extend-your-stay-canada-worker.html

You will check "initial work permit" on the application form. The IEC health insurance bit on the checklist does not apply to you as you are not applying for an IEC.

Hi KBH,

One other quick question...

In question 3 on the "Application to change conditions, extend my stay or remain in Canada as a worker" form, I am unsure as to whether I select "Apply for a work permit with the same employer" or "Apply for a work permit for the first time or with a new employer." I intend to remain with the employer I am with currently on my new work permit but it is an open permit and not connected to them.

Thanks again for your help!

Apply for a work permit for the first time or with a new employer.
