*Is it true that if you are exporting your car to Canada you have to own the car for at least 3 months?

*I understand that you need to have the purchase receipt of the car when exporting, but my question is: what about if you purchase the car from a private party without any purchase receipt because you’ve paid cash for it?

Thank you.

No, it's not true. However, if you have owned the car for 3 months you dont have to pay duty and import sales tax.

You don't need a receipt to export your car. For exporting purposes (from US) you only need to present the title or other document proving you are the owner of the car. You need to fax the title to US customs 72 hrs prior to export. However, you do need the sales receipt when you import the car on the Canadian side. Even if you buy private and pay cash, you should always ask for a receipt.

So I guess I do need a receipt. Because when I export in one side I will import on the other side. I have something like a receipt that the seller made up himself on microsoft word that shows his name address, price of the car and his signature. Would this be a valid form of receipt when inporting at the Canadian side?

Thank you GK.

Yes, that is just fine. Does the VIN show on the receipt? Would be good if it is, but not necessary, so if it's not don't panic...

I pretty sure it does, I need to double check when I get home. But I know for sure it says the make and model of the car.

Thanks again.

Don't forget to read www.riv.ca to see if the car is importable and what documents you require.
