Hi,

We received notice last week that COPR is in the mail. We have decided to land right away (we considered delaying). We have a trip booked to his home country on February 16. We are returning because his mother has been diagnosed with brain cancer, on top of battling bone cancer for the last couple of years. The prognosis is guarded. While we could reschedule the flight if the PR card does not come in time, now we found out that I am pregnant and as such, will not be able to delay flights by a couple of months as I won't be able to fly.

Because she is terminally ill, if we produce notice from her oncologists when we apply for the PR card, is this a valid reason for a rushed card or travel document? Anyone have experience here? TIA.

You can only apply for a travel document once you are outside of Canada.

For the PR card, you can certainly request rush processing however CIC doesn't always consider it for new PR cards.

Thanks Scylla. If we do not get the PR card in time and go to Ireland for our visit anyway, would this be a circumstance where we can apply for a travel document? Or is that really more for urgent situations as opposed to those who choose to leave knowing they do not have PR Card in hand?

There are no real circumstances. You are fine apply for a PRTD and will have no issues being approved. The only issue is processing time. PRTDs generally aren't processed in just a day or two. How long are you there?

Feb 16 to Mar 4

That should be more than enough time to obtain a PRTD.
