Employment Insurance (EI) after how many years get payed if unemployed?

hello,
I wonder I worked now a year in Canada with my PR and my boss might lay me off over the winter ... would I get some money from the government if I am unemployed?

how does it work??? what do I have to do ... do I have to pay in to get later something or??? Can a permanent residence apply or not even that?
